New York City surveyed residents last year on their feelings about various municipal services. Some results are not surprising: people in high-crime areas feel the city does a poorer job at crime control than those in safer neighborhoods. However, residents in areas of the city that actually use the public school system rated it much higher than, say, the Upper East Side, which had a lower opinion of the schools (22% rating them good or excellent) than anywhere else.

Rhetoric of the Image

At Times Open on Friday, I was chatting with the guy who runs the unofficial CNN Breaking News feed on Twitter. I recorded the interview on my BlackBerry, so the video would be automatically uploaded to Qik, and on a Flip camera, so I’d have a higher-quality copy for editing later. Another attendee, understandably finding some humor in this scene, snapped the above photo on his iPhone and uploaded it to Flickr. Maybe Gelb will do it. I insist on being with the people I’m writing about.”

Since I’m now an employee of Harvard University, I get to enjoy all the trappings of a major bureaucracy. Like the Harvard 2008 Staff Survey, which was distributed this week along the with the free gift at left. Yes, those are magnetic-poetry tiles filled with the jargon of human resources.

It is the rare set of words that can not be arranged into something vaguely akin to literature. But I’ve given it a lot of thought this week, and I think these tiles are immune to eloquence. They may very well be the 54 dreariest words in the English language. This is all I could muster:

life is a balance, I think
work, values, relationships
our best is enough

"A lot of people think the world will end in 2012.
The Scarlet Letter for Maryland sex offenders this Halloween will be a bright orange pumpkin.

That is the symbol on a sign they are required to post on their doors with a warning, in capital letters, to trick-or-treaters: “No candy at this residence.”

The paper signs began arriving last week in the mailboxes of the roughly 1,200 violent and child-sex offenders across the state with a letter explaining how they are to comport themselves on Oct. 31. […]

In addition to posting the sign, the offenders must stay at home, turn off outside lights and not answer the door, according to the letter obtained by The Washington Times.

I desperately want one of these signs. Will pay top dollar. (via Tapped via Simon)

Here’s a Joe we can all believe in.

Here’s a Joe we can all believe in.

Everything Seemingly Is Spinning out of Control

Everything Seemingly Is Spinning out of Control:
In retrospect, this absurd AP piece was eerily prescient.

via Questlove via Simon

via Questlove via Simon

Campaign Season

This new ad by Democratic senatorial candidate Jim Slatterly of Kansas…
